Best Maternity Appropriate Sports Bras

Maternity Sports Bras

It’s a nightmare experienced by most pregnant and breast feeding women, a rapidly changing body and breast size leaving women insecure and constantly under prepared to cope with their ever changing shape.

Not only does a whole new wardrobe and set of bras need to be acquired, but you may find yourself needing to update sizes frequently. Who can keep up with that?

And one of the most common grievances we hear about is the inability to find a supportive Sports Bra to keep active or get moving again. There are a few simple guidelines to choosing the best maternity appropriate option.

1. Go wire free. Not only will this ensure milk ducts don’t become blocked, which can help to avoid mastitis but it will give you a bit more flexibility in size as your breasts change volume.

2. Front adjusting straps are a great bonus. Straps that you can alter from the front ensure you are easily able to adjust the firmness of your bra once you’re in it. They work as a bonus when breast feeding as the straps can be undone for front access. On top of that, by releasing the strap length a little you can somewhat alter the breast volume the bra will allow for which helps when you’re changing shape rapidly.

3. Coverage is key. No Sports Bra should show cleavage, so choose a bra with a high neckline. This will leaving you feeling secure and supported as you move.

When we talk ‘Maternity Sports Bra’, we’re really referring to ‘Maternity appropriate Sports Bra’. We find these options fall within brands that specialise in Sports Bras, rather than brands that specialise in maternity wear. This makes sense to us as these are the companies that have spent the necessary time and research into developing products specifically for activity.

We have some ‘favourites’ for this category, which are really bras that tick all of the points above. That being, are wire free, have front adjusting straps and offer great coverage.

These include:

Moving Comfort Jubralee (A – E cup, although this does fit a little small in the cup)

Breast shape in a Sports Bra…. it’s your choice.

Gone are the days of the compulsory Sports Bra ‘squish & squash’ resulting in the dreaded in uniboob. With the new design principles that most technical brands are implementing one can exercise some degree of choice over their breast shape in a Sports Bra.

We get all sorts of requests when it comes to breast shape at She Science. Some customers will make a B line for bras that flatten and squash the breasts, while others will request a pointy or rounded shape. Whichever your preference, we should be able to achieve this.

For those wanting a flat and ‘minimised’ (not my choice of word, but ‘minimised’ is often used by customers in this sense) look, then a compression style bra is what you should go for. Typically these bras don’t have cups. They are made of firm materials with little stretch and will flatten the breast against the chest wall. Often in mainstream retail these are found as crop style bras, although this is not necessarily always the case. For those wanting this look we recommend the Moving Comfort Jubralee, Enell Sport & Nike X back bra.

And those looking to follow Madonna’s footsteps with a pointed or cone shape then a great option is the Freya Underwire Sports Bra. This is essentially an encapsulation bra (that means, it separates and holds each breast firmly apart). The way the seams are stitched in to the cup result in the slightly pointy look. This is popular with women who have been scarred by years of squishing and squashing their breasts into a Sports Bra that they haven’t been satisfied with.

The most requested shape we get is the rounded by separated look. This is pretty easy to achieve these days as most technical Sports Bras we sell offer a combination of compression and encapsulation in their design. That means the breasts are separated, and a layer of compressive material is applied to the top. It leaves a very flattering shape, and a feeling of security. Moulded cups can also be used in Sports Bras to assist with attaining this shape. Some of my top picks for getting this shape are the Berlei Ultimate Performance Bra, Panache Sports Bra and the Shock Absorber Active D+. But there are plenty more that fit in to this category.
While we can afford to get our preferences met with shape these days, my best advice is not to limit yourself in store, but rather be open to a range of suggestions. You never know which bra will feel and fit best, and when you find the perfect match I guarantee you won’t be bothered about the shape it leaves you with.

Sports Bras for triathlon… what are your priorities on race day?

When it comes to choosing a Sports Bra for your Triathlon race day there are quite a few things to consider. Before moving too far down the process I think it’s important to know where your priorities lie first.

Some women are most concerned about the way the Sports Bra looks under their tri suit. If this is you, then you should identify this as it will eliminate a few options early.
Bras that will hide nipple show under tri suits are often made up of thick moulded cups.

While these will be more flattering under a suit, they are likely to hold moisture for longer which will increase the chance of chafing. Chafing or ‘bra burn’ will strike when there is excess moisture or friction, and will be particularly nasty if both of these join forces. If nipple show or unsightly straps is what bothers you try the Moving Comfort Juno or the Berlei Ultimate Performance, but be aware that these bras will hold moisture.

Other women are most concerned about the support factor. On race day there are plenty of spectators around, for those who are body conscious in a tri suit ‘strapping the girls down’ might be their main priority.

Lots of high impact Sports Bras use thick straps, underwire and or moulded cups. While these are great features for support the straps could compromise the look under the tri suit, underwire could irritate you when swimming and moulded cups will hold moisture.

So if support is your main priority look for a wire free high impact bra with thin yet firm materials, and a racer back design. Some great options include the Moving Comfort Rebound Racer, Enell Sports Bra and the Shock Absorber Active Multi bra. But remember, these may hold some moisture and could show under your tri suit.

For most, the possibility of chaffing is their biggest nightmare which will have them leaning towards bras made of quick dry fabrics. While you may expect me to launch in to the ’support should be number 1’ rant, when it comes to your race day bra I am most concerned about staying chafe free as this is the biggest sports bra issue women experience with triathlon.

To prevent chafing we focus on the bra fit and the materials used. The bra band must be perfectly firm to eliminate unnecessary band movement (FYI the bra band is the highest risk zone for bra burn). Materials need to be thin, quick dry fabrics. 2XU make a great Tri specific bra which has the best quick dry material in the business. Other options to explore include the Moving Comfort Jubralee and the Shock Absorber Ultimate Run Bra.

While we don’t often choose to compromise on support, because race day makes up such a small percentage of your overall training it’s unlikely you will have any adverse effect to choosing comfort over support for race day, and you won’t be left with the battle scars of bra burn.

Oprah’s favourite Sports Bra, the Enell Sport bra

Well if it got Oprah’s big tick of approval then you’d have to assume it’s a goodie! The Enell Sport Bra brings a fairly unique option to our bra wall. While most Sports Bras these days are designed to separate the breasts, holding each one firmly in its place on its side of the body, the Enell differs. It is a compression style Sports Bra meaning that the breasts are compressed against the chest wall, flattened slightly if you like. The bra should be fitted more firmly in order to best restrict breast displacement during activity. This results in an immediate feeling of security and in most cases extreme comfort.

Our larger busted women have responded fabulously to the ‘different factor’ that this presents, many opting for this as an alternative bra option for high impact gym sessions.

To add to the ‘different factor’, this Sports Bra goes on like a vest, and does up like a corset with hook and eyes from the front. The wide shoulder straps mean that pressure is dispersed evenly over the shoulders, and indentation from bra straps is avoided. We also like the high neckline that adds to the support factor by limiting vertical breast displacement during activity. This also helps avoid wardrobe malfunctions during any comprising yoga poses!

We stock this option in both the black and white, and find it suitable for women with cup sizes greater than DD. Most commonly we are fitting F, G, GG, H, HH and J cups in to this bra. It does have a unique sizing system, so it’s definitely best to try before you buy with this model.

Melbourne’s newest Sports Bra store – She Science

After years of development it’s been an absolute joy to watch my farfetched dream slowly turn into a reality. So with just 1 month to go until our (hopeful) launch date I am thrilled to announce that Melbourne’s newest Sports Bra store, She Science, will be opening in Kew this August!

My goal for She Science is to provide a set of solutions to the problems that so many women face when purchasing Sports Bras. Many women unnecessarily opt out of leading an active lifestyle due to the discomfort and embarrassment caused by their breasts.

She Science will offer a variety of in store shopping experiences that can be tailored to each individual’s personal preferences. There will be an emphasis on achieving the best fit, enhancing ones form and prescribing the most functionally appropriate option for each customer.

We hope that these three things will improve the comfort, confidence and performance of our customers.

Our stock includes the following brands:

Enell

Shock Absorber

Moving Comfort

2XU

Nike

Berlei

Anita Active

This carefully selected, tried and tested range will cover A – J cups and be suitable for women participating in any array of sports.
